1 Introduction
This introductory chapter sets the stage by outlining the project's scope, target audience (HSC Extension 1 and 2 students), and optimal usage strategies. It systematically reviews the core language of functions, including relations, mappings, domain, range, and the vertical/horizontal line tests. Essential number sets (, , , ) and important families of functions (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, etc.) are catalogued, along with a preview of continuity and differentiability. The chapter then delves into symmetry (even/odd), inverse functions, and composition, followed by key transformations (translations, dilations, reflections). Piecewise-defined functions, absolute value as a piecewise construct, and the analysis of reciprocals using sign tables and asymptotes are introduced. Parametric and multivariable functions, a brief note on Big O notation for comparing growth rates, problem-solving habits, and a small Extension 2 preview round out the preparation, equipping students with the prerequisite knowledge for the worked problems ahead.
